I’m back (well sort of)

PROFESSIONAL demands, personal commitments, and various other activities which involve lounging about in the apartment in my boxers while half-asleep has prevented me from updating this blog regularly. Besides having written a book—which is currently being edited—in the past month, I have also been preoccupied on the professional front, trying my very best to produce what is, I think, generally considered to be good examples of journalism, which is difficult to come by, especially with an apartment to maintain, a cat to attend to, and various pages to close everyday. Despite these duties, I have managed to add a number of entities to my blogroll—on the right of the page under Links of Some Interest—including the blog of Ma. Luisa G. Fuentes, not related to my friend Art, who has the same surname because Lu-An is a good worker and Art well, is, as I said, a very good friend of mine. Check out other blogs as well, including the blog of a fat feline, and another friend who recently migrated to WordPress.

    Dear Mr. Basilio;

I am Richard Madriaga, 4th year college student from the University of Santo Tomas and presently taking up Advertising at the College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD). We are in the process of doing our thesis and I have chosen to do a Book Illustration on a book entitled Nine Supernatural stories. To accomplish the study, I would like to gather information from the book’s authors to help in supporting this research. In my search for references, I found your website in the Internet and I feel that you are one of the best authorities and resource persons in this field. Considering this, may I ask if it is possible for you Sir, to answer the following questions?

    1. Can you give us a little background about yourself?
    2. How were you able to start your career as a writer?
    3. What other factors helped you develop your craft in creating literary works?
    4. What sparked your interest in short story, novel writing? When and what made you decide to pursue in this line of work?
    5. Who or what are your influences in terms of writing novels and short stories?
    6. What genre of book do you prefer to read and write?
    7. Is the story The Man Who Came Home in the book Nine Supernatural stories based on experiences or fantasy/imagination?
    8. From the story, are the characters based on anyone you know or are they made up characters?
    9. In viewing Filipino culture and folklore are there sufficient materials for a writer to concentrate in writing stories about the supernatural?
    10. If given the chance for an artist to do an illustration of your work would you be willing to make use of this opportunity?
    11. How long does it take to write a story?
    12. Did you have any formal studies in literary writing?
    13. Did you attend other seminars or workshops in literary writing?
    14. How would you characterize your readership? Is it an average literary reading audience?
    15. What benefits come from making a successful story or book?
    16. What do you think is missing from books/ novels today that might be contributing to the decline in readership?
    17. As a Filipino writer, in what ways can you capture the attention of mass readership, for them to participate and support our local literary works in general?
    18. Being a great writer, how does this industry support the growth of the Filipino culture?
    19. For those who are starting in this field of work, what suggestion or tips can you share?
    20. What do you see in the near future for yourself?
    21. Is there a particular quote or something that you find inspiring?

I assure you that all the information you will provide me will be used for academic purposes only. I will truly appreciate your favourable consideration on my request and may I hope for your kind response in the soonest possible time. Thank you.

    Very truly yours:

    Richard Madriaga
